I spent the day catching up on my email news. Sept. 10th was World Suicide Awareness Day last week and it looks like it was very successful. The National Institute of Mental Health released a National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. They stated there was over 36,000 suicides annually in the US. The new strategy reemphasizes the importance of research that can help develop effective interventions. www.nimh.nih.gov/about/director/2012/strategy-on-suicide-prevention.shtml. Similarly, the Surgeon General stated: "Preventing suicide is everyone's business.....We see especially alarming trends in our armed forces...These deaths are especially heartbreaking because we know they are preventable."www.usatoday.com/news/health/story/2012-09-11/suicide-preventions/57731002/1.
I have been thinking that my next book will be on youth suicide. It is a very serious topic as statistics show 1 in 10 youths think about suicide. Education and awareness can lower that percentage which we have to do. What do you think?
