Iris the Dragon is proud to present their Children's Illustrated Book Series. Each book addresses a different special needs topic. To date the books have addressed various emotional and behavioral challenges such as anxiety, depression and ADHD and developmental conditions such as Asperger's.
Every Book is beautifully illustrated to capture its audience's attention and to reflect the emotions experienced by a child who has an emotional, behavioral and developmental condition.
Iris the Dragon Books have been vetted and endorsed by professionals in the fields of psychiatry and neurology to realistically portray the story of a child with a special need.
“Catch a Falling Star: A Tale from the Iris the Dragon Series” is the first book in the Iris the Dragon series. “Catch a Falling Star” provides its readers with a variety of symptoms that could be considered red flags in a child’s emotional and social development. This book is intended as an introduction to the topic of mental health in addition to educating children about the importance of sharing their thoughts and worries with a caregiver.

“Catch a Falling Star” is about a boy Fish, named after his love for fly-fishing, and his star guardian, Iris the Dragon. In the book, Fish starts to experience some of the early signs of mental illness, feeling anxious and confused at times. While no one else understands Fish’s feelings, Iris helps Fish understand and deal with his thoughts and worries by teaching him to relax and telling him her dragon secrets for a healthy brain.

“Lucky Horseshoes: A Tale from the Iris the Dragon Series” addresses the topic of ADHD in children. The book illustrates through its images and words the feelings and thoughts of an ADHD child. Using the delicate approach of the fairy tale genre, this book provides children with AHDH an opportunity to identify with their thoughts, feelings and actions through the young character in the book. For caregivers, “Lucky Horseshoes” has an informative epilogue about ADHD from Dr. Catharine Robertson, Staff Psychiatrist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Chair of the ADHD Network of Eastern Ontario. In addition, the book illustrates the role of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in helping a child achieve their potential, which is helpful for any child who is concerned about having one.

The book shows Skippy experiencing the early signs of ADHD, which begin to interfere with her school, home life and her dream of taking her horse, Little Ben, to the summer fair. As Iris befriends Skippy, Iris is able to help Skippy deal with her symptoms and boost Skippy's confidence in her ability to succeed. With the assistance of Iris, Skippy slowly takes on more responsibilities and learns strategies that help her achieve her dreams.

“Hole in One: A Tale from the Iris the Dragon Series” is the third book in the Iris the Dragon series. The book addresses the topic of anxiety disorder in children specifically anxiety about going to school and performance. This book provides children with anxiety an opportunity to identify with their thoughts, feelings and actions through the young character in the book. The book also helps normalize what a child with anxiety might be going through to let them know there is hope and that getting the help they need is important.
“Hole in One” features a young boy called “Teeman.” In the book, Teeman has a dream to be an amazing golfer. His anxiety about school and performing interfere with his dream and his life seems to be tumbling out of control until he meets Iris the Dragon. Equipped with her knowledge of children's mental health issues, Iris helps Teeman learn to address his anxiety which enables him to interact with the world in stead of shying away from it in the end. Iris will be launching her 4th book this Spring called “I Can Fix It.” The new book focuses on educating her audiences about Asperger's Syndrome one of the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and the importance of a caring community surrounding children with developmental, emotional and behavioral challenges. Once again, Iris helps the central character in the book understand herself but decides to also tackle the challenge of getting the whole community to support and understand what children with various mental health conditions are confronted with in life. The book has been vetted by the Dual Diagnostic Team at CHEO and an informative epilogue about ASD has been provided by Dr. Mark Kaluzienski. In addition the book had received endorsements from Dr. Peter Szatmari and Dr. Simon Davidson.
