Project: Kids, Let's Be Superheroes — a special edition eBook addressing the mental health impact of COVID on children.
Project: Kids, Let's be Superheroes has been vetted by doctors at CHEO and Ontario's Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health. The target audience is 6 to 12 year-olds and the eBook is intended to be facilitated by an adult. In the book, Iris the Dragon and Ottie Otter are off on a special mission to reduce the mental health impact of COVID-19 on children. The eBook addresses the social emotional impact of COVID living on children and offers adults insight into why they might be seeing a change in a child's behaviour. The eBook covers topics including stress, anxiety, loss, and grief that children might be experiencing during a pandemic which is consistent with feelings related to dealing with unexpected changes in one's life. Parents and adult supporters are also offered conversation starters and resources to help them support children. Projet : Les Enfants, Soyons des Superhéros Iris le Dragon et Ottie Otter sont en mission spéciale pour réduire l’incidence de la COVID-19 sur la santé mentale des enfants. Ce livre à édition spéciale traite des conséquences socio-émotionnelles de la COVID sur les enfants et offre aux parents un aperçu des raisons pour lesquelles ils pourraient constater un changement dans le comportement de leur enfant. |
Catch a Falling Star A book addressing how a child navigates the early signs of a mental illness. A young boy named Fish begins to experience feelings of anxiety and confusion. It feels like his brain is very busy and noisy. Fish feels scared when this happens and it gets worse when he goes to school. Fish meets Iris the Dragon and learns techniques to help him relax and understand that his parents and doctors can help. This is a story about a boy who has a variety of symptoms that could be considered ‘red flags’ in a child’s emotional and social development. |
Lucky Horseshoes
A book addressing how a child navigates ADHD. A young girl named Skippy finds it very hard to concentrate at school. Loud sounds and even lights are distracting. She finds that daydreaming or getting up and moving helps her control the distractions - but doing that disrupts the class. Skippy meets Iris the Dragon and, with the help of her parents and doctors, learns about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This is a story about ADHD and gives children an opportunity to identify with the thoughts, feelings and actions of one who has ADHD. |

A book addressing how a child navigates an anxiety disorder. A young boy named Teeman can't seem to relax. He gets so nervous sometimes that his heart beats very fast, he feels nauseous, dizzy, or often gets a bad headache. Teeman meets Iris the Dragon and learns techniques like Dragon Breathing to relax. This is a story about anxiety disorder; specifically school and performance anxiety. It's an opportunity for children to identify with the thoughts, feelings and actions of one who suffers from anxiety. |
I Can Fix It!
A book addressing how a child navigates having ASD. A young girl named Josie experiences teasing and bullying from her classmates. To others, Josie appears shy or not friendly and she often gets angry when something confuses her. She meets Iris the Dragon and learns how to relate to others and develop resilience in her life with the support of a caring community. This is a story about Asperger Syndrome and an opportunity for children to identify with the thoughts, feelings and actions of one who suffers from a form of autism. |
He Shoots! He Scores!
A book addressing how a child navigates stigma and self stigma related to having a mental illness. A young boy named Fish turns 13 and it is discovered that he has Bipolar Disorder. Despite getting help, Fish realizes that his new high-school community isn’t as understanding and supportive as when he was young. He calls on Iris the Dragon for help after realizing that negative stereotypes and attitudes about people with mental illness still exist in society. This is a story about self stigma and family stigma and it emphasizes the importance of a society understanding the challenges faced by children who have a mental health condition. |

A book created for military families to address the mental health impact of frequent transitions and changes in life. A young boy named Luc experiences loneliness, worry, and anger. His parents work for the military and the family often experiences change, like moving to a new base and deployments. With his dad away, Luc must now take on more responsibility and he is feeling stressed. Luc meets Iris the Dragon and learns how to regain control of his situation and that there is help for him and his family. |

the Children's Play: Iris the Dragon - free!
The 3-character play first came to life during the 2003, Workman's Theatre Project, performance of "Iris the Dragon" at the Madness & Arts World Festival in Toronto, Canada. Through Fish, the audience becomes aware of symptoms that are ‘red flags’ in his emotional and social development. The play is intended as an introduction to the topic of mental health wellness and challenges and strives to educate children on the importance of sharing their thoughts and worries with a caregiver. |
